Rocca di Angera Ala Scaligera Oltre il buio Beyond the Darkness

From 17 April to 1 October the Ala Scaligera at the Rocca di Angera, in the province of Varese, opens its spaces to host the contemporary art exhibition Oltre il buio, curated by Alberto Salvadori, in collaboration with Galleria Franco Noero.

After two years, a cultural event of international scope returns to the rooms of the Ala Scaligera, which underwent a conservative restoration between 2015 and 2017 at the wishes of Princes Vitaliano and Marina Borromeo Arese in order for the spaces to be used for contemporary art exhibitions. The initiative falls within the cultural projects of the Terre Borromeo tourism destinations on Lago Maggiore.

“Life at the Rocca di Angera is like a flower that is reborn and decays with each season, in a cycle that has its linchpin, its principle of continuity, hidden in the land where it is located, in the culture of those who conserve it and hand it down through the generations, the centuries. The thought that enlivens this location has become a spiritual exercise, a way of existing, an acceptance of its own nature as a flower, which is born, dies and is reborn with each season (Alberto Salvadori).

The Oltre il buio exhibition stages this sequence and this renewal thanks to the presence of the works by 15 artists represented by the Galleria Franco Noero:

Lothar Baumgarten, Pablo Bronstein, Jason Dodge, Sam Falls, Lara Favaretto,
Piero Gilardi, Henrik Håkansson, Mark Handforth, Jim Lambie, Jac Leirner,
Robert Mapplethorpe, Mike Nelson, Henrik Olesen, Simon Starling, Francesco Vezzoli.

The central theme is the extraordinary development of the perception of mankind, who, through light, has discovered the need to see something that is not just what is visible naturally, but rather the visible of our unconscious, of the part of us that is both inscrutable and indispensable at the same time.

Today the spaces of Angera revisit for us this extraordinary development, which has favoured a form of coexistence between mankind and nature, between mankind and art.
